What are tinyURLs?

by admin on February 23, 2009

TinyURLs are the new way of sending links when you are using twitter. If you use Twitter you know that you only have 140 characters long to write. So what happens when you have a long link  you want to share with your followers? well, tiny urls makes it easy for anyone to share this long web urls. TinyURLs will converts a long URL into a smaller one.

How it works

The most common service that creates this is   Tinyurl.com Basically you copy and paste (or type) the URL you want shorten and it automatically creates a shorter URL which is basically a shortcut URL. (I could go into more technical detal on how this works but I don’t think we really need to or care how it gets done, as long as it gets done..right?) Have you created a shortcut on your desktop for a folder on your computer? well, basically this tiny URLs are the same thing. So what you do is you take that shortcut URL or tinyURL that was created and copy and paste it to your twitter.

If a tinyURL has been created already for a specific URL that you are requestion, the program automatically will give you a copy of that tiny URL and not create dulicates cool huh!?! This tiny URLs can work anywhere, you don’t always have to use them for twitter. You can use them for your blog posts, your websites, or any other place on the web.

UPDATE MARCH 22, 2009

I found exactly what tiny urls was missing. A way to track this links. If you post things on twitter, wouldn’t you like to know how many people clicked on it? are you writing stuff and people area actually paying attention? or are they passing you by and you don’t even know it? well, here it is.

it’s called BudURL.com you can get a free account and create your tiny urls, then it will automatically keep track of the clicks they get. If you want a more extent detailed tracking you can actually upgrade your account to have access to this.
